Alie Jones Records Hat Trick in 5-1 Win over New England College

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 30, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College field hockey team defeated intrastate foe New England College, 5-1, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on a cool and rainy Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the NAC. The Chargers will conclude a four-game homestand on Thursday against Simmons at 3:30 p.m. New England College drops to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Pilgrims will host Lasell on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Chargers were led by sophomore Alie Jones' (Cape Neddick, Maine) hat trick. Senior Paige Viens (Middlebury, Vt.) scored the other two Colby-Sawyer goals.

Colby-Sawyer scored three times in the first eight minutes of the game and never looked back. Viens opened the scoring at 4:53 when she dodged the NEC goalie and put home her sixth goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Jones beat the goalie to the right side off a nice feed from junior Jordan Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.).

Viens put the Chargers in front 3-0 with a long distance goal at 7:53.

Colby-Sawyer would take a 4-0 lead into the half after Jones notched her second tally of the game off a one-timer from junior Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.).

The Pilgrims cut the deficit to three, nine minutes into the second half, when the NAC's leading goal scorer, Brittany Tierney (Ottawa, Ontario), cleaned up a failed clear attempt for her 10th score of the season.

The Chargers closed the game with less than 10 minutes to play as Jones completed the hat trick. Viens sent a pass to the sophomore, who converted the one-timer for her team leading eighth goal of the season.

Freshman goalie Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) finished the win with one save. NEC goalie Michaela Clark (Dorchester, Mass.) allowed four goals and made four saves in the first 23 minutes, while Amandaline Tibbals (Concord, N.H.) had two saves and one goal allowed in the final 47 minutes.

Colby-Sawyer outshot NEC 16-2 and held a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
