NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 15, 2016 – Seniors
Erika Leach (Barrington, N.H.) and
Allyse Mullen (Wilder, Vt.) were integral parts of Saturday's 5-3 senior day North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Castleton.
Prior to the game, Leach and Mullen were honored for their four years of dedication to the Colby-Sawyer field hockey program. Leach scored the game-winning goal, while Mullen collected a pair of assists.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the NAC. The Chargers will step out of conference on Wednesday to host Mount Ida. Castleton drops to 6-10 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Spartans travel to Fitchburg State on Thursday.
Sophomore
Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) scored the game's opening goal in the fifth minute of action. Mullen assisted on Schuster's seventh tally of the season.
Castleton answered 16 seconds later with Emily Lowell's (Brandon, Vt.) team leading 11th goal of the season. Senior Haley Spittle (Duxbury, Vt.) was credited with the assist.
Colby-Sawyer retook the lead six minutes later off the stick of freshman
Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine). Mullen set up the play once again for her second assist.
The Spartans knotted the game in the 22nd minute when Spittle and Lowell connected again. This time, Spittle found the back of the cage off a feed from Lowell.
Coming out of halftime tied at 2-2, the Spartans wasted little time taking a lead. Less than two minutes into the second frame, Lowell put the visitors back on top 3-2 with her 12th goal of the season.
Four minutes later, junior
Jenna Donahue (Walpole, Mass.) notched her first career goal to tie the game 3-3.
Leach put Colby-Sawyer on top for good with the eventual game-winner in the 45th minute off an assist from Schuster.
An insurance goal from Jones in the 62nd minute sent Colby-Sawyer home with a 5-3 victory.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Xena Ras (Medfield, Mass.) made five saves in 37 minutes, while freshman
Hanna Crose (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) had a pair of saves in the final 33 minutes. Castleton goalie Meeghan Doris (New Milford, Conn.) collected four saves.
