Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 3, 2014 - The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team scored twice in the first half and held on for a 2-1 victory over Norwich on Wednesday afternoon at the Sally Shaw Veitch Turf Field.
Colby-Sawyer (1-2) has a week off before hosting Gordon on Wednesday, September 10 at 4:00 p.m. Norwich (2-1) hosts Castleton on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
Sophomore
Rachel Quaye (Westminster, Mass.) put the home team on the board seven minutes into the match with her first tally of the season. Quaye received a pass from senior
Sarah Little (Scarborough, Maine), which she volleyed and struck into the left corner of the net.
Colby-Sawyer doubled its lead at the 26:21 mark to 2-0. Freshman
Corrie Hoyt (Lebanon, Conn.) dribbled by a defender and created space that allowed an opening for a shot. Hoyt brought the ball into the right half of the 18-yard box and shot cross-corner past the keeper for her first collegiate goal.
The Chargers held a 9-1 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard at intermission.
Sophomore
Lizzie Jorgensen (Manchester, Vt.) thought she had given Colby-Sawyer a 3-0 lead at 77:58, but her shot ricocheted off the cross bar and back into the field of play. Norwich took advantage and began a charge into its offensive end. Freshman Tiana Cass (Torrington, Conn.) gained control of the ball 40 yards from the Chargers' net and raced away from the defenders. Cass had a break-away down the right side and finished her chance into the left side of the net at 78:24 to cut the Cadets deficit in half.
Each team had a late chance at tacking on another goal, but both goalies were up to the task and made the save.
Junior
Karley Hamilton (Bradford, Vt.) made a pair of saves for Colby-Sawyer in the win. Sophomore Molly Miller (Raymond, Maine) had eight stops for Norwich.
Colby-Sawyer held a 19-6 advantage in shots and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
