Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 10, 2014 – The Gordon women's soccer team received a first half goal from senior Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamstead, Conn.) and held on for a 1-0 victory at Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday afternoon at Kelsey Field.
Gordon improves to 4-1 and hosts Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference opener on Saturday at noon. Colby-Sawyer falls to 1-3 and travels to Keene on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start.
The game-winning goal came in the 23rd minute after Midwinter controlled the ball from 40 yards out. She dribbled into space, creating a break away from the Charger defenders. As she entered the 18-yard box she drew the Colby-Sawyer goalie,
Karley Hamilton (Bradford, Vt.), off her line. Midwinter ripped a shot into the upper left side of the goal for her first tally of the season.
The Fighting Scots held the 1-0 lead heading into halftime and outshot the Chargers 5-4.
After back and forth play for much of the second frame, Colby-Sawyer's best chance came with less than eight minutes to play. Junior
Tallon Tomasi (Williston, Vt.) weaved through a couple of Gordon defenders and found the foot of sophomore
Rachel Quaye (Westminster, Mass.). Quaye was able to score in the left corner of the net, but the equalizer was called back because she was ruled offside.
The Fighting Scots' back line kept the clean sheet intact for the remainder of the contest en route to the 1-0 victory.
Gordon goalie McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) earned the win and made three saves. Hamilton had five stops for Colby-Sawyer.
