CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – November 15, 2014 - The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team fell to No. 24 MIT, 3-1 in the 2014 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium. With the win, MIT improves to 2-3 all-time in first round contests, and will now face Roger Williams University in the second round on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer ends its season at 13-6-1.
MIT (15-4-2) commenced the match with multiple shots from senior Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.) and junior Morgan Moroi (New Albany, Ohio), which were blocked and sailed above the Chargers' cage. The Cardinal and Gray eventually converted at 14:21 when Krishnamachar drilled a shot from over the middle that landed in the lower left corner. Krishnamachar, who located the back of her opponent's net for the eighth time this season, set up her team's initial strike by dribbling past defenders on the nearside before firing a shot in the middle of the box.
Moroi doubled the Engineers' advantage roughly 13 minutes later when she raced down the middle, collected a through ball and dribbled past Colby-Sawyer junior goalkeeper
Karley Hamilton (Bradford, Vt.) for her seventh goal at 27:10. MIT eagerly tried to net additional tallies over the final few minutes of the half, but saw opportunities from junior Zara Perumal (Poway, Calif.) and freshman Olivia Struckman(Scottsdale, Ariz.) denied.
Colby-Sawyer (13-6-1), which trailed 2-0 at the break, sliced the deficit at 64:51 when sophomore
Maura Kane (Derry, N.H.) directed her second goal of the season past a slew of MIT defenders into the top post on the right side of the Engineers box. Tech attempted to answer with back-to-back shots from junior Jennifer Ibanez (West Windsor, N.J.) and Struckman, but one shot sailed wide, while the other was denied by Hamilton.
Ibanez eventually located the back of the net at 80:22 with her fifth goal of the season, which provided the Engineers with a 3-1 lead. Krishnamachar set-up the Cardinal and Gray's final marker with a cross from the nearside that landed on the foot of Ibanzez, who then fired a shot over the middle.
MIT concluded the match with 23 shots, while Colby-Sawyer registered six, including five in the second half. Tech also held an advantage in corners, two to one. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J.) picked up her 15th win between the pipes and turned away three shots, while Hamilton finished with five saves.
