NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 4, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team rebounded from a loss on Saturday, with a 2-1 win over Plymouth on the second day of the Colby-Sawyer Women's Soccer Labor Day Tournament.
Colby-Sawyer (2-1) opened the scoring in the 13th minute when sophomore
Adrienne Bender (Wakefield, R.I.) put a deflection from Plymouth (1-1) goalie Courtney Lins (Fremont, N.H.) into the back of the net. The initial shot was taken by
Lauren Bernard (Manchester, N.H.) who picked up her first assist of the season.
Five minutes later, the Panthers knotted the score at 1-1. Sophomore Carol Messler (Durham, N.H) sent a cross from the left side to the opposite side of the net. Freshman Kate Nixon (Wakefield, Mass.) was waiting and headed the ball past the dive of Colby-Sawyer keeper Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.).
The Chargers quickly regained the lead less than two minutes later when Bender controlled a ball in a scrum in front of the net and scored the eventual game-winning goal.
Each team had a couple of scoring chances in the second, but nothing came of them as the goalies were up to the task. The Chargers protected home field in the 2-1 win.
Colby-Sawyer keeper Shalyn Spencer earned her second win of the season by making two saves. Plymouth goalie Courtney Lins made seven saves in the loss.
The Chargers will travel to Norwich on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm contest.
