Late Goal Lifts Gordon Past Women's Soccer, 2-1

BOX SCORE

WENHAM, Mass. - September 28, 2011 - The Gordon women's soccer team used a pair of late goals to capture a 2-1 win over the visiting Chargers of Colby-Sawyer in non-conference play Wednesday.

Gordon improves to 5-4 overall, while Colby-Sawyer falls to 6-4.

After Gordon opened the game controlling much of the possession, play leveled after the first 15 minutes with both teams having ample offensive opportunities (10 shots for Gordon, eight for Colby-Sawyer) but neither able to find the back of the net, leaving the game at a 0-0 stalemate heading into the half.

The second half proved to be a similar story, with neither team able to break the silence until Gordon's Karina Scavo (Jr./Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) collected a ball from Caitlin Nedde (Jr./Colchester, Vt.) and ripped a shot from 15 yards in the 76th minute to give Gordon the 1-0 lead. Just nine minutes later, however, the Chargers' Lauren Bernard (So./Manchester, N.H.) stormed back with an offensive surge of her own, netting the equalizer from the right corner of the box off a pass from Andi Logan (Sr./Eliot, Maine) to breathe life into Colby-Sawyer's effort. Determined not to cede a loss on their home field, the Scots responded just one minute later when Nedde broke free and buried what proved to be the game-winner from the left side of the area.

Keeper Kari Christensen (So./Standish, Maine) turned away three shots on the day, including an impressive punch out midway through the second half on a ball that was destined for the far corner of the net. Colby-Sawyer's Shalyn Spencer (Jr./Natick, Mass.) turned away nine in the loss.

The Scots return to play on Saturday, October 1 as they travel to Boston to face Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match at 12:00p.m. Colby-Sawyer will host UMaine Farmington on the same day at 3:30p.m. for a North Atlantic Conference tilt.
