NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 2, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team earned its fifth shutout of the season with a 5-0 win over Thomas, in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Sunday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Thomas drops to 1-9 overall and falls to 1-4 in the NAC.
The Chargers received an own goal in the 26th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Freshman
Michelle Upham (Chelsea, Vt.) put the Chargers up 2-0 after she scored off a goalie deflection from a shot by senior
Abby Wills (Uxbridge, Mass.). The goal was Upham's third of the season.
Freshman
Sarah Little (Scarborough, Maine) gave Colby-Sawyer a 3-0 lead before the half when she ripped a shot past the keeper on a perfect cross by senior
Liz Allen (Holden, Mass.). The goal was Little's first collegiate tally.
Colby-Sawyer scored twice more in the second half en route to the 5-0 win.
Allen connected for her first goal of the season on a header in the 54th minute. Sophomore
Stephanie Huntley (Woodbury, Conn.) took a corner kick and found Allen waiting towards the far end of the goal where she finished the play with the goal.
Huntley added a goal of her own in the 67th minute when she sent the ball into the upper left corner from just inside the box. The goal was Huntley's third of the season.
The Chargers held a 24-4 advantage in shots.
Junior Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.) stopped three shots in 79 minutes, while junior
Ekta Sampson (Hyde Park, Vt.) added 11 shutout minutes. Thomas sophomore keeper Kate Thibodeau (Woolwich, Maine) made 12 saves in the loss.
Colby-Sawyer travels to Maine Maritime on Saturday for a 1:00pm start. Thomas hosts Green Mountain next Saturday at 1:00pm.
