Women's Soccer Falls to Berry College, 4-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. - October 10, 2011 -The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team lost to Berry College, 4-1, in non-conference action Monday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer falls to 9-5 on the season, while Berry improves to 6-2-1.

Berry jumped out to an early lead when the Charger defense could not control the ball and Joy Pianka (Lilburn, Ga.) scored 1:21 into the game. The Vikings continued their offensive pressure throughout most of the first half outshooting the Chargers four to one. Berry held a 1-0 lead at the break.

Colby-Sawyer began the second half with an offensive surge and forced the Vikings into a hand ball in the box. Sophomore Lauren Bernard netted her 11th goal of the season on the penalty kick in the 53rd minute to tie the match at 1-1.

Berry answered seven minutes later when Joy Pianka's shot was deflected wide by Colby-Sawyer junior netkeeper Shalyn Spencer. Senior Katie O'Brien (Lawrenceville, Ga.) gathered the rebounded and netted her fifth goal of the season to give the Vikings a 2-1 advantage.

Berry extended its lead to 3-1 in the 69th minute when junior midfielder Sheena MacGowan (Atlanta, Ga.) redirected the ball and senior Leah Hatheway (Coronado, Calif.) finished the play for her ninth goal of the season.

The Vikings found the net once more in the 85th minute when sophomore Molly Johnson (Spring Hill, Tenn.) sent a through ball to junior Kim Tresse (Pearl River, La.). Tresse netted the pass to lift Berry to the 4-1 victory.

Colby-Sawyer travels to Lyndon on Saturday for a 1:00pm start. Berry will continue their New England tour as they head to Curry College tomorrow for a 4:00 pm tilt with the Colonels.
