NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 10, 2009 – Freshman Ashley Reis (Peterborough, N.H.) scored her first collegiate goal 12 minutes into the first half to help lift the Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team past Lasell 2-0, on Thursday evening. The Chargers are unbeaten in their last three contests and improve to 2-1-1 overall. Lasell is now 1-1 after suffering their first loss of the season.
After an uneventful first 11 minutes to start the half, Ashley Reis darted down the center of the field and fired a shot on net. Lasell keeper Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, Mass.) was up to the task and got both hands on the ball. However, the ball deflected right back to the foot of Reis and she calmly put the rebound into the back of the net. Lasell tried to find the equalizer heading into half time but Colby-Sawyer goalie Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.) saved all five shots on goal the Lasers took. The Chargers held a 1-0 lead at the break, outshooting the Lasers 8-6, while Lasell held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half began similarly to the first as both teams battled for field position throughout the first 10 minutes. The Chargers turned up the heat in the 11th minute when Reis bent a ball towards the net from the left flank. The ball flew over the Stickley's head and bounced off the crossbar. Lucky for the Chargers, sophomore Abby Wills (Uxbridge, Mass.) was waiting in the box and shot the rebound past the goalie for the 2-0 lead.
Spencer was not tested in the second half and finished with five saves en route to her first career shutout victory. Stickley finished with six saves in the loss.
Colby-Sawyer will open its TCCC schedule on Saturday with a home match against Anna Maria at 12:30 pm. Lasell will also be in action on Saturday with a match at Suffolk beginning at 6:00 pm.
