Jim was an early contributor to the success of the men's basketball program. After his junior season, he was named Honorable Mention All-Northeast District by Columbus Multimedia for his efforts on the court. His senior year, Jim won several national awards for his efforts including Second Team Academic All-District, First Team ECAC Division III New England All-Star, First Team All-Northeast National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Columbus Multimedia First Team All-Northeast and was chosen to participate in the New England Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star game.
In addition to his many regional and national accolades, McGilvery was named the team's MVP and chosen as the Colby-Sawyer Male Athlete of the Year. He also still ranks among the leaders in several statistical categories including fourth in points (1,939), rebounds (709), steals (162) and three-pointers made (191).
