John Grainger Comes From Behind to Defeat Ryan Emerson, 2-1
NEW LONDON, N.H. – March 22, 2011 – John Grainger (Asst. Baseball Coach) earned a 2-1 come from behind victory over Ryan Emerson (SID) to move into first place in the 2011 Intramural Racquetball Standings.
Grainger jumped out to a 12-0 lead in game one, but Emerson found some strength and quickness in the tank to rally all the way back to tie the game at 12-12. After a couple of nice serves gave Grainger the lead back, Emerson once again battled through a slow start converting several dink shots that had Grainger stuck in his tracks. Emerson went on a 9-3 run to take game one 21-15.
Game two was a battle of attrition as both players began to show fatigue. The game featured four lead changes and several ties. A couple of lucky serves off the warped floor panels against the wall propelled Grainger to a 21-17 win.
The story was much of the same in the third and deciding game. Both players made some nice shots, but also costly mistakes. With the game tied at 10-10 and first place in the standings on the line, Grainger mustered up some great low wall shots that Emerson could not get to in time. Grainger finished the game on a 5-1 run to close the match.
Both players will return to the court later this week. Grainger will play Mike Gregory, while Emerson squares off against Tracey Austin.
